What you need A dry box or a sealed container with a desiccant; a place away from speakers, clasps and tablets; a decision about running or resting.

Steps

  1. Choose a place with no magnets nearby. Laptop speakers, tablet covers and magnetic clasps are the usual culprits.
  2. Use a sealed container with a desiccant if the storage place is humid, and renew the desiccant.
  3. Decide whether the watch runs. A watch that runs keeps its lubricant distributed; a watch that rests does not.
  4. If it rests, leave it part-wound rather than fully wound or fully run down.
  5. Re-read the four cells when you take it out, with the lift angle set, and compare with the reading you recorded before storage.

Why the running decision matters

Lubricant in a watch is designed to be spread by movement. A watch that sits for a year has oil pooled in one place and dry pivots in another, and the first thing that happens when it is started is wear at the dry pivots. Running it monthly for a few hours is cheaper than the service that a long rest eventually requires.

A watch that is worn daily is not immune: sweat and humidity are the corrosion risk, and the bench's position is that a rinse and a dry before storage does more for a watch than any container.

The bench's claim

The bench holds that the running-or-resting decision should be made per watch and recorded, and that most people who store watches do not make it at all. The failure that follows is attributed to the movement rather than to the storage, which is why the decision is worth writing down.
