A verge escapement and a lever escapement share a name for a pivoted piece and nothing else. They drive different oscillators through different geometries, and calling one an early version of the other misdates both.
A verge is not an early lever

What the two actually share
Both have a pivoted piece that swings. That is the whole of the resemblance. A verge's pallets are on a vertical staff and engage a crown wheel; a lever's pallets are on a fork that engages a wheel from the side and passes the impulse through a roller. The names came from the shape of the pivoted part, not from the mechanism.

Why the classification matters
A clock or watch is dated partly by its escapement, and treating the verge as an early lever compresses five hundred years into one lineage. The verge belongs to the thirteenth century onward; the lever belongs to the nineteenth. A single description that covers both makes the dating useless.
The anchor escapement is the one that sits between them in time and function, and it is a pendulum escapement rather than a balance escapement. That is a third family again, not a step in a ladder.
The bench's claim
The bench holds that the habit of describing escapements as a progression towards the lever is a nineteenth-century framing that survived into modern writing, and that it should be replaced with a family tree. A reader who learns the tree dates objects correctly; a reader who learns the ladder does not.
