What detachment means

In a lever escapement the balance has to unlock the escapement before it can be impulsed, so the balance is in contact with the escapement for a substantial part of every beat. In a detent escapement the balance trips a detent, receives an impulse from the escape wheel, and then swings free. The escapement does not touch it again until the next beat.

Why it is the best timekeeper and the worst daily watch

Detachment removes the escapement's influence on the oscillator for most of the beat, which is why marine chronometers used it and why it produced the best rates ever recorded in a portable timekeeper. The same detachment means the watch will not start from rest without help, and a knock can stop it, which is why it never became a wristwatch escapement.

A detent escapement is often described as a chronometer escapement. In Swiss usage a chronometer is a certified watch, which may well have a lever. The two uses of the word are not the same and the confusion is old.

Boundary: detent, deadbeat and lever are three families

The detent is detached. The deadbeat is not detached but has no recoil. The lever is neither detached nor recoil-free, and it compensates with geometry and adjustment. Three different solutions to the same problem, and none is a variant of another.

The misreading to name: calling any high-accuracy watch a detent chronometer. Certification is a measurement, not a mechanism.

A claim to defend

The bench holds that the detent's reputation for fragility is overstated for a clock that is never moved, and understated for anything worn. The failure mode is a knock, not a rate drift, so the risk is a function of how the object is used rather than of the escapement alone.
